Methods to reduce size of audio file

I have an audio file (m4a format) that I'd like to be able to send via text. It seems that audio files above a certain size will fail to send. Is there anyway to reduce the size of the audio file after it has been created? I was thinking it might be possible by reducing the bit rate. Any suggestions how to approach this?
