Java: Amplitude over frequency for a sample [on hold]

I was wondering if anyone knew a way to get a specific sample from a clip, and then find the amplitude for each frequency. I am working on making a visualizer for a sound file similar to the "bars" visualization for Windows Media Player. However, I am really new to the java sound API and audio programming in general so any help is appreciated greatly. Thanks in advance.
