Why using 44.1/48KHz sample rate for audio

Human Being can only hear 20Hz~20KHz. Actually most of us can only hear <16KHz.

So I have a question: Why most of digital audio system use the sampling rate of 44.1Khz/48KHz? Why not use 40KHz ?
