what is the best way to compare two recorded sounds and see if they are close?

I want to know whether there are any techniques available to compare two recorded sounds(different voices) and see if they are close.That means two different person pronounce the same word, I want to identify both the words are same. I don't have any idea how to do this. I don't even know whether it is possible or not.Please help me if you know anything about this.Any idea about this, highly appreciate.Thank you.
