Google Chrome on iOS 8 does not respect the mute rocker. Is there any way to detect / compensate for this in javascript?

I have a website that plays sounds. It works great in mobile safari, playing sound when the phone is in an unmuted state. It does not play sound through the phone speakers when the phone is in a muted state. It plays sound through the headphones even when muted.

In Chrome, it always plays sound. If headphones are in it only plays through the headphone but if the phone is muted and no headphones are present it still plays sounds through the phone speaker.

Is there a way for me to detect / turn off sounds if the phone is muted?
